新耐震

shin taishinしんたいしん

New seismic standard

The post-June-1981 earthquake code, designed so buildings survive a major quake without collapse. For wooden houses there is a further threshold: the 2000 revision tightened foundation and joint rules, so 1981–2000 wooden houses sit in a middle band. "Which side of 1981 — and of 2000?" is a question to ask about every older building.
