jūkyo hyōjiじゅうきょひょうじ
Residential address system
The building-based address system used for mail and navigation in most urban areas, introduced in 1962. It identifies buildings, not land — so the address on a listing usually cannot be used to look up the land registry. In areas without jūkyo hyōji, the address and the lot number are the same thing.
