大字

ōazaおおあざ

Large village section

A legacy place-name division, usually the name of a pre-merger village, that survives inside many rural addresses. Addresses like 〇〇市大字△△ are common in the countryside and signal that the address is lot-number based rather than jūkyo hyōji.
